Why Apple Secretly developing Satellite?

Apple might be deploying technology to  bypass wireless carriers and directly beam information to Apple devices. Apple might actually be planning to develop satellite technology to beam down internet services and data to its devices, including iPhones.

The team is said to be led by former aerospace engineers, Michael Trela and John Fenwick, who previously worked at satellite imaging company Skybox Imaging that was eventually sold to Google in 2014. Other notable people in the team include Daniel Ellis (from Netflix), Matt Ettus (from Ettus Research) and Ashley Moore Williams (from Aerospace Corp.).

he duo spent the last year and a half exploring the feasibility of developing satellite technology and it is only in the recent months that the work has started to intensify. Apple CEO Tim Cook has also shown interest in the project and the team is working on the project with the goal of deploying it within the next 5 years.

The use of satellites mean that Apple could use it to beam data to Apple devices. These satellites could also be used to provide location tracking and improve its map service.Still unsure whether Apple is planning to develop its own satellites or simply harness use on-ground equipment to harness the capabilities of existing satellites. Launching one’s own satellites is a costly affair and a handful of companies have failed.
